An effort to increase funding for arts and music education in California schools hit a major milestone, with organizers recently submitting more than a million signatures to push through a statewide measure in the ballot general elections in November.

Campaign organizers held an event at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 26 to officially launch the campaign and celebrate the milestone.

the “Arts and Music in Public Schools” The ballot measure would pump about $800 million more each year — nearly double the current amount — into arts and music programs in K-12 public schools. Campuses that serve larger numbers of low-income Black and Latino students would receive more funding.

Organizers need 263,200 valid voter signatures for the measure to appear on the ballot. Former Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner, who is leading the campaign, said in January his goal was to collect at least 1 million signatures to ensure the measure qualified for the ballot.

Petitions with signatures – which have yet to be verified – were submitted to election officials in all 58 counties in the state last week.
