Belhaven University President Authors Book Defining a Fresh Model of Leadership

Jackson, Mississippi – Declared “one of the most radical and thought-provoking books I’ve read in a long time,” Jordan Raynor, executive chairman of Threshold 360, along with a host of prominent Christian leaders, praise of a new book published by the President of the University of Belhaven, Dr Roger Parrott.

“Opportunity Leadership: Stop Planning and Start Getting Results” was published this week by Moody Publishers through national booksellers in paperback, Kindle or Audible formats. The book is also published in Korean.

“This is an incredibly important book that goes against almost everything you’ve learned about the importance of strategic planning,” said Richard Sterns, president emeritus of World Vision US. “Roger wants you to forget all the tedious, tedious planning that leadership gurus want you to do for a moment and free yourself to see and seize the opportunities that come your way.”

Dr. Parrott challenges leaders to develop a mindset of “leadership of opportunity,” in which they see God-directed results like never before. In simple language, it guides readers in developing traits to focus their vision of leadership on untapped opportunities. Additionally, it provides a step-by-step plan for ministry organizations and churches to create organization-wide trends that enable them to respond to opportunities with speed, skill, and energy.

Thanking the trustees, faculty and staff of Belhaven University, Dr Parrott said: “The ideas shared in ‘Opportunity Leadership’ are due to the gifts of a wonderful university that has learned to abandon traditional planning for capture God’s best future.

The book defines opportunity leadership as “being grounded in anticipating God-given opportunities that mesh seamlessly with our mission, gifts, and abilities—propelling us to destinations that are ordained by heaven.” The book provides a detailed path to creating a culture of ministry focused on seizing new opportunities and paradigm shifting challenges, such as:

• Leading without a plan is the plan

• Make decisions that don’t just solve the problem

• Practice forward-looking evaluation

• Emulate baseball managers instead of football coaches

• Embrace Speed

• Be comfortable with risk

• Learn to love roadblocks

“In my 33 years as a university president, the most important decision I made was to abandon traditional long-term planning and instead create a culture and perspective ready to seize God-given opportunities,” Dr Parrott said. “After too many years of struggling with the inflexibility of planning structures, I have found that the best plans we could imagine around conference tables pale in comparison to what God would like to do through us.”

Former Krispy Kreme President Jim Morgan spoke about the book, saying, “During my time at Krispy Kreme, I would have loved to have had Dr. Parrott’s ‘Opportunity Leadership’ as a guide for our 2008 corporate turnaround. -2016.
