“Kindergarten all day is precious and necessary for many children and their parents. We appreciate the leaders who made this work a priority and carried it out in their schools, ”said Foundation Director General Roger Quarles. “By providing all-day kindergarten to families in Idaho, we are able to better prepare our youngest learners with a solid educational foundation that allows them to get off to a good start.”

The private family foundation has provided $ 700 million for Idaho education and community improvement over the years.

Students from the 17 schools receiving the last round of funding will be able to attend kindergarten all day free of charge. This is the second year that the foundation has funded the program, which will cost approximately $ 1.4 million in 2021-2022.

Idaho only funds half-day kindergarten. Still, most schools offer all-day kindergartens by supplementing state funding with other funds to make up the difference, including grants, federal funds, and tuition. Kindergarten is optional in Idaho, where children are not required to attend school until age 7. Idaho lawmakers have consistently voted against funding kindergarten all day – including this session when House Bill 331 was rejected. The measure would have allocated up to $ 42.1 million to kindergarten all day.

The Foundation says it is committed to monitoring the academic progress of graduates of the full-time kindergarten programs it funds.

The schools that receive the grants come from both urban and rural areas of Idaho, representing public institutions and private charters. They include:

  • Alturas International Academy (Idaho Falls)
  • Anser Charter School (Garden City)
  • Compass Charter Public School (Meridian)
