Mordecai’s 7 TD propels SMU ahead of Abilene Christian 56-9

DALLAS (AP) – Tanner Mordecai broke a school record of seven touchdowns – five in the first half – and SMU opened it up in the second quarter and beat Abilene Christian 56-9 on Saturday in an opener of the season.

A transfer from Oklahoma, Mordecai’s seven touchdowns tied the American Athletic Conference record.

Mordecai threw 21- and 8-yard scoring passes to Grant Calcaterra in the first quarter and early in the second, for a 14-0 lead.

Later, in the second, he joined Danny Gray on plays from 30 and 27 yards. Then, with 29 seconds left to halftime, Mordecai threw Rashee Rice 30 yards and the Mustangs led 35-3 in intermission.

Mordecai completed 24 of 30 passing attempts for 317 yards while seven different running backs totaled 171 rushing yards.

Stone Earle pitched for 176 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats.
