May 7 – After being suspended for two years during the COVID pandemic, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Academy is restarting its Homeschool Extension Program for the 2022-2023 school year. Mt. Pisgah Baptist Academy is a full-time Christian academy that runs grades K-4 through 12 and uses the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum.
Mt. Pisgah describes his program as individualized, dependent, and supervised. “It’s a great extension of the school. It’s a bit different. Homeschoolers have to do homework, naturally, with help from parents, but they have to come here at least once. a week to grade their work like the kids. They have to take an average of at least two tests a week and they do them here under our supervision,” Principal Ronald Portell said.
The program also offers additional support for parents and homeschooled students if they are struggling with a particular topic. “If they’re having trouble at home when they’re working, they can call here and talk to a teacher on the phone. They can come in if they call us, if we’re here, and they can talk to a teacher one-on -a.” Portell said.
Portell believes the program gives parents a good indication of their child’s progress while maintaining the security parents seek from homeschooling. “Our programs give more accountability. We can see if a child is falling behind and we can let parents know,” he said.
