CAPE CORAL, Fla .– James (Jim) E. Church claimed his spiritual inheritance in Heaven on September 27, 2021. He was 82 years old and was born in Coalmont, Indiana on July 17, 1939, to Coy Blan “Mike” Church and Eldred Craig Church. Bicard Greenwood.
Jim graduated from Linton Stockton High School in 1957. He proudly served three years in the US Navy before graduating from Indiana State University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in 1965.
Jim began his career teaching at West Vigo High School as a conductor in 1965. He then became an assistant professor and conductor at Indiana State University Marching Sycamores in 1968-1976. While working on a graduate degree in education, Jim continued as a group director at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and after graduating from EDS education at the University. from Illinois and ISU, he returned to West Vigo High. The school as the dean of the boys.
Jim became principal of Greencastle High School in 1982, then was Deputy Director of Curriculum at Terre Haute South Vigo High School from 1985 to 1990, when he founded the Crusader Singing Ministry for the Christ and established a Christian home for young men at Little David’s located at the former Otter Creek HS in North Terre Haute, IN.
He returned to public education in 1998 and was Deputy Principal and then Principal of Northview High School in Brazil, IN until 2006. Jim ended his education career by returning to Greencastle High School in as director until his retirement in 2009.
Upon retirement, Jim and his wife Brenda moved to Cape Coral, Florida, where he continued to supervise student interns at the University of Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University, in addition to caring for incarcerated youth. at the Lee County Juvenile Center.
Jim is survived by his wife and soul mate Brenda; and two sons, Michael (Brenda) Church, Belpre, Ohio, and Mark Church, Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Mardee (Paul) Miller, Knoxville, TN and Michele Shetter, Carmel, IN; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Mullen of Carmel, IN; and stepson, Jeff Thompson of Terre Haute, IN. Other survivors include her eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two half-sisters, Margaret (Richard) Schafer of Plainfield, IN, and Sarah (Fred) Vordee of Elkhart, IN; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and grand-nephews; as well as two very special nephews, Tim (Margaret) Church and Troy (Leslie) Church, both of Linton, IN; very special nieces, Tammy Young, Tracy Hunt and Tanya Johnson; and her special sister-in-law, Micki Church of Linton, IN.
Jim was predeceased by his parents; and beloved brother, Jerry Church, Linton, IN; and beloved sister, Jane Staley, Clay City, IN.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, October 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northview High School auditorium in Brazil, IN. Jim proudly served as Gideon and requested upon his death that any donation be made to Gideons International to provide the Word of God for distribution around the world.
